The Clown 2's release sparked heated discussions
After The Clown 2 was released, it did cause a lot of discussion. In terms of box office sales, its performance was far inferior to its predecessor, The Clown. The previous film earned 1.07 billion dollars at the global box office with a production cost of 55 million dollars, while the production cost of The Clown 2 soared to 190 million dollars. Together with the publicity and distribution expenses, the total expenditure was as high as 300 million dollars. It would require a total box office of 450 million dollars to recover the cost. The box office performance in North America was not ideal. The first weekend's box office was 37.678 million US dollars, which was less than the first weekend's box office of 96.2 million US dollars. The second weekend's box office in North America plummeted by 81% compared to the first weekend, setting a new record for the first weekend decline of a super-British comic film. The global box office was currently 160 million US dollars. There were also many negative comments on the public's reputation. Douban's opening score rose slightly from 5.9 to 6.0, Rotten Tomatoes 'freshness was only 33%, and the audience's popcorn index dropped to 37%. The audience's reputation was worse than the media's reputation, and there was a clear difference compared to the previous work, The Clown's Rotten Tomatoes' freshness of 68% and popcorn index of 89%. The audience's negative comments were mainly focused on singing and dancing, being long, not feeling good, and wanting to see The Clown but seeing Arthur more. However, there were also opinions that the audience who gave low marks did not understand the film. For example, the song and dance elements in the film were used to lighten the depressing atmosphere of the story. The film was completely outside of the British universe in terms of creation. The core of the film was to show the process of two people going crazy. It could be Arthur and Lily, or it could be understood as the struggle between Arthur and the clown in a body. The content of the film could be Arthur's fantasy, and there were many hints from the director. The film was also full of projections and criticisms of reality.
