What are the characteristics of book series that started as fanfic?
Book series that started as fanfic often have a sense of familiarity combined with novelty. The familiarity comes from the connection to the original source that inspired the fanfic. However, the novelty lies in how the author takes the concept further. They might change the relationships between characters, or the overall plot arc in a way that makes it distinct from the original. This blend can make these book series very appealing to a wide range of readers, from die - hard fans of the original to those just looking for an interesting new read.
One characteristic is that they often build on existing fictional universes or characters at the start. For example, if it started as a 'Star Wars' fanfic, it might initially use the 'Star Wars' setting and some of its iconic elements. Another characteristic is that they can attract an existing fan base from the original source material. Fans of the original, like 'Twilight' fans in the case of 'Fifty Shades of Grey', might be curious to see the new take on the familiar concepts.
They tend to have a passionate following right from the start. Since they come from fanfic, there are already people who were interested in the story in its early form. Also, these book series usually have a certain level of creativity that is a bit different from traditional original works. The author has the freedom to play around with established ideas in new ways. For instance, in 'Carry On', Rainbow Rowell was able to take the 'Harry Potter' - like elements and twist them into something fresh and exciting for readers.

I recommend a novel related to this topic," The King." In this novel, all races coexist, and the struggle and cultural integration between humans, sea people, elves, dwarves, orcs, and other races show the diverse racial settings and cultural backgrounds of Western fantasy novels.
