One that always gives me chills is about a haunted lighthouse. A new keeper arrived at the lighthouse. At night, he would hear strange tapping on the walls. He thought it was just the wind at first. But then, he saw a wet footprint on the floor that led to the edge of the balcony. He looked out into the dark sea and saw a figure emerging from the water. It climbed up the lighthouse, its hands leaving slimy trails. When it reached the balcony, it stared at the keeper with its dead, white eyes. The keeper never returned to that lighthouse again.
I like the story of the cursed mirror. A young woman bought an antique mirror at a flea market. When she brought it home and hung it on her wall, she noticed that her reflection in it seemed different at times. One night, she woke up to see a figure in the mirror reaching out to her. She tried to run, but the figure in the mirror kept getting closer. Every time she looked in the mirror after that, the figure was there, until she finally threw the mirror out, but she could still feel its presence in the house.

Suddenly, a cold hand grabbed her ankle. She screamed but no one could hear her. She was never seen again.

There was a dark forest where no one dared to go at night. Legend had it that a witch lived deep within. One day, a group of hikers got lost and ended up in that forest. As night fell, they started to hear strange noises. Branches were snapping as if something large was moving. Then, they saw a pair of glowing eyes in the bushes. One of the hikers shone a flashlight, and for a brief moment, they saw a hideous face with long fangs and matted hair. They ran blindly through the forest, not knowing if they would ever find their way out.

My favorite has to be 'The Monkey's Paw'. It's a short but extremely effective horror story. A family gets a magical monkey's paw that can grant three wishes. However, every wish comes with a terrible price. It shows how our desires can lead to unforeseen and terrifying consequences.

One of my favorite scary stories is 'The Tell - Tale Heart' by Edgar Allan Poe. It's about a narrator who is haunted by an old man's vulture - like eye. The narrator's slow descent into madness as he plots and executes the old man's murder is truly terrifying. Every little detail, like the way he describes how he hid the body under the floorboards, and then the growing paranoia as he starts to think he can still hear the old man's heart beating, makes it a classic scary story.

There was a knock on the door at midnight. When I opened it, a cold wind blew and a voice said, 'Let me in.' I knew it was a ghost. This story gives me chills every time I think about it. It makes you wonder what would have happened if I had let the 'thing' in. And it plays on the fear of the unknown, the idea that there could be something lurking outside, waiting for an invitation to cross the threshold into our safe space. It's simple yet very effective in creating a sense of horror.

Sure. 'The Haunting of Hill House' is a great one. The story is set in a haunted mansion, and there are all kinds of strange noises, apparitions, and an overall sense of unease. It plays on our fears of the unknown and what might lurk in the dark corners of old, creepy houses.

Faulkner: His works, including The Sound and the Fury and The Beach in Virgil, all show his unique narrative style and deep thoughts on human nature, society, and politics. Tolstoy: His works, including War and Peace and Anna Karenina, all revealed the dark side of Russian society and the complexity of human nature at that time. These novels were all excellent short stories that could give readers different reading experiences and inspirations.

There was this old attic in my grandparents' house. One day, I decided to explore it. It was filled with dusty boxes and cobwebs. As I was rummaging through the boxes, I found an old photo album. The pictures inside were all blurry, except for one. It was a picture of a woman with no face. Just as I was looking at it, the attic door slammed shut. I was trapped. I could hear strange noises, like scratching on the walls. I banged on the door and called for help. After what felt like hours, my grandfather finally opened the door. I never went back into that attic again.
