How to become a writer, or a picture book author?

I'm a junior high school student. I want to be a magazine editor, or a contract author (picture book author) like Anthony and the disappearing penny. However, I'm not sure which direction I should go in and what kind of school I should apply for, so I'm asking everyone. What were the requirements to become an editor? Other than being able to write, what were the requirements for a contracted author to go to university, education, and so on? (For example, what department to study, etc.) A picture book author needs to study art? Could a class like Anthony be free? (No office restrictions) Please answer.
