Lu Xun's text, Blessing
" Blessing " was a famous story in modern China about the fate of a poor peasant family in the midst of a plague. In the novel, the protagonist Xianglin Sao was a hardworking, kind, simple and unfortunate woman. She gave birth to a son, but the child fell ill and passed away due to lack of nutrition. After that, her life became even more difficult because her husband, Ah Mao, died of illness. Only she and her young son, Xiang Lin, were left at home. In order to support her family, Aunt Xianglin had to sell matches, but because the weather was too cold, she could not stand for a long time and was very weak. After a plague broke out, Xianglin Sao's son also fell ill. In order to take care of her son, she had to pick more matches to keep warm. However, she accidentally fell into the well while picking the matches. Although she struggled desperately, she still fell into the well and was tortured by hunger and cold. In the end, Aunt Xianglin died in extreme poverty and pain, and her son also died unfortunately. This story profoundly revealed the darkness of society and the ugliness of human nature. It also showed Lu Xun's strong concern and appeal for poverty and misfortune.
