The ancestor of the prehistoric novels was the Romance of the Gods. The Romance of the Gods was an ancient Chinese myth. It told the story of King Wu of Zhou, the son of King Wen of Zhou, conquering King Zhou after the end of the Shang Dynasty and the early Zhou Dynasty. In the novel, there were many characters from the prehistoric times, such as the Three Royals and Five Emperors, and the immortals on the Investiture of the Gods. The stories of these characters and the legends of the prehistoric times gradually combined to form the foundation of the prehistoric novels. Later, the development of prehistoric novels gradually flourished, and many famous works appeared, such as Journey to the West, Water Margins, Dream of the Red Chamber, and so on.
