The witchcraft culture was also known as the Yuan God culture and the drama culture. It referred to the river god worship culture in the Yuan River basin with the Hongjiang River as the center. It was the embodiment of the reverence of the ethnic minorities in Xiangxi for all things in nature, gods, and ancestors. It blended the natural ecological environment, ancient myths and legends, social and cultural environment, and other factors of the ethnic groups in Wuxi Mandi. The Nuo opera in Xiangxi was the carrier of the Nuo culture and had profound cultural meaning. It originated from the sacrificial activities of the primitive religion, and had been continuously inherited and evolved in China's thousands of years of history. It was called the "living fossil" of Chinese drama. During the reign of Emperor Kangxi, Nuo opera entered Xiangxi and combined with the local witchcraft to form Xiangxi Nuo opera. The Nuo opera in Xiangxi retained the original color of exorcism. The performers wore Nuo masks that were transformed from the twelve beasts responsible for "eating ghosts" in the ancient Nuo ceremony. Its main god of worship changed from Nuo God to Nuo Gong and Nuo Mu, and from the sacrificial activity of "exorcising ghosts and plagues" to the sacrificial activity of the great god that carried the spiritual sustenance of the people of Xiangxi. In the process of development, it was infiltrated by Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism, and the scope of performance expanded from entertaining gods to entertaining people, from mystery to secular. Chenzhou Nuo is the most popular Nuo opera in the Tujia and Miao areas of Xiangxi. The representative song is Moving Pioneer. However, with the development of the times, the variety of entertainment methods and the limitations of their own performance content, the popularity of Xiangxi Nuo opera declined, and the cultural content gradually lost. In the Nuo opera performance, the "Nuo mask" was an important prop. The actor wore a mask according to the character, matched with bright clothes and other props to show the character's identity and personality. The mask was brightly painted, the lines and contours were exaggerated and freehand, the shape was strange and vivid, the actor's body movements were exaggerated, and the singing was difficult for outsiders to understand, which was very visual impact.
