Song of Pipa, Tang Bai Juyi
Song of the Pipa was a long narrative poem by Bai Juyi, a poet of the Tang Dynasty. This poem was written in the 11th year of Yuanhe (816 A.D.). It was about the 10th year of Yuanhe (815 A.D.), when Bai Juyi was demoted to the post of Sima of Jiujiang Prefecture. The poem described how he met a Chang 'an prostitute playing the pipa while he was sending off guests at the head of Xunyang River. Through the description of the pipa girl's superb playing skills, such as "The big strings are as noisy as the rapid rain, and the small strings are as whispering. The lines such as "noisy and jumbled, big beads and small beads fall on the jade plate" vividly show the beauty and variety of pipa music. The pipa girl recounted her life experience. When she was young, she had superb skills and was famous in the capital. She was sought after by many rich children. However, as she grew older, she could only marry a merchant. The merchant valued profit over separation, so she stayed alone and lived a lonely and desolate life. Bai Juyi thought of his own political experience. He had been ambitious and actively remonstrated, but he was banished to Jiangzhou, far away from the center of power. His heart was filled with disappointment and resentment. Therefore, he sighed with emotion,"We're both people who have fallen from grace. Why should we meet again?" This poem was of high literary value. It was one of the representative works of Bai Juyi's New Yuefu Movement. It reflected the living conditions of the people at the bottom of society at that time and also expressed the poet's lament for his own fate. In addition, Song of the Pipa had also been adapted into various art forms, such as large-scale Tang poetry classical musics, songs, and so on. The novel "Song of Everlasting Sorrow: Morning and Evening" is equally exciting. Everyone is welcome to click and read it!
