Based on context alone In the traditional sense, being expelled from the sect meant that the master-disciple relationship was severed. A sect was usually a group that passed down skills, knowledge, or sect ideals. The master would pass on what he had learned to his disciples, and the disciples would follow the rules of the sect and learn from the master. Once a disciple was expelled from the sect, it was often because the disciple had committed a serious violation of the sect's rules or ideals. In this case, the status and relationship between the master and disciple no longer existed. However, in some literary works or special settings, there might be some complicated emotions and subsequent developments after being expelled from the sect. Although there might still be emotional ties between the master and disciple, from the formal and traditional definition of the relationship, it was no longer a master-disciple relationship.
