How can I create a believable Over the Garden Wall OC for fanfiction?
First, consider the aesthetic of the show. The OC should fit in with the dark, autumnal, and slightly surreal world of the Unknown. For example, give them clothing in earthy tones and perhaps a tattered cloak. Second, think about their backstory. Maybe they were once a normal person from a nearby village that got caught in the strange magic of the Unknown. Third, give them a unique ability or trait that is relevant to the world, like being able to communicate with the crows that are often seen in the show.
To create a believable OC, start with their personality. Since the show has a mix of melancholy and whimsy, your OC could be a bit of both. They could be a dreamer who is also a bit of a loner. As for their appearance, look at the different species and creatures in the show and find a way to blend or contrast with them. For instance, if there are a lot of human - like characters, your OC could be more animal - like but still retain some human features. Also, think about their motivation. What do they want in the Unknown? Are they searching for a way out like Wirt and Greg, or are they there for a different reason entirely, like protecting a particular part of the forest?
Well, you need to really study the lore of the show. Know what kind of magic exists, what the rules are in the Unknown. For your OC, base their existence on these rules. For example, if there is a magic that is tied to the changing of the seasons in the show, your OC could be a seasonal spirit. Their behavior, powers, and even their speech patterns should reflect the nature of their being. Also, consider their relationships with the existing characters. They could be an old friend of the Woodsman, or they could have a rivalry with Auntie Whispers. By building these connections, your OC will feel more like a part of the Over the Garden Wall universe.
