The leaves are part of the plant's respiration process, they fall off and decay quickly. Did anyone else think this plot escalated too fast? Looks like someone took forty pages and boiled it down to four.

Leaves have been used for millennia as a synonym for decay and death, outside the tree they decay and die faster than insects. Imagine a book where a human character is reborn on a single sheet that will decay in hours. There are multiple parallels involved about life and death but the title states that he will be a "companion" to a deity who happens to be a tree. All symbology is destroyed. The goddess could be a toilet bowl and the MC companion a piece of toilet paper that become gods in the narrative. If you don't like it, you can read it and make an extensive and more complete comment than mine. I even encourage you to do so.
