The Corpse and The Chimera
In the gaslit gloom of Victorian London, a man becomes a monster to save a life. But when his latest victim turns out to be his only chance at redemption, he must choose between his mission and his heart.
Alistair Finch is a brilliant medical student drowning in despair. His beloved sister is dying of consumption, and the institutions of science and faith have failed her. Driven to desperation, he makes a Faustian bargain with the shadowy Obsidian Club. They will provide him with the forbidden alchemical knowledge to save her, but in return, he must become their instrument of vengeance. Using his skills as a resurrection man, he now stalks the city not for corpses, but for live prey, harvesting the corrupt aristocracy who prey on the poor. To the world, he is the Chimera, a monstrous myth haunting the London fog.
His bloody work is solitary and grim, until one night he makes a horrifying discovery. Among the bodies he acquires for practice is a young woman, pale and cold. But as he raises his scalpel, he finds she is warm. With a ragged gasp, she awakens on his dissection table, terrified and with no memory of who she is or how she came to be buried alive.
Now Alistair is trapped. He cannot let her go, for she is a witness to his crimes and his dark pact. Yet he cannot bring himself to harm the one innocent soul to stumble into his nightmare. Forced to keep her hidden in his crypt like laboratory, he finds an unlikely ally in his captive. She is sharp, resilient, and sees the sliver of humanity left within him that he thought was lost.
As they work together to unravel the mystery of her past, they uncover a conspiracy that leads right to the heart of the Obsidian Club and the very villains he has been hunting. The line between hunter and protector blurs. To save his sister, Alistair must sacrifice his soul. But to save the woman he is coming to love, he might have to sacrifice everything else.
