When it’s done right, it actually adds to the story — builds characters, relationships, tension. Acting like it’s automatically a problem is just oversimplifying. And the “it kills long-term engagement” take doesn’t really hold either. Plenty of stories balance it well and keep people hooked. If you don’t like using it, that’s fine. But calling it a storytelling standard is pushing it.

If you prefer not to include it, that’s totally fine. But presenting that choice as a general standard for narrative quality is a stretch.
