Agreements between Gu immortals are always made with an information path Gu. You can assume that anytime Fang Yuan works with someone they set up an agreement beforehand that restricts what they can do. If they break the agreement they die, pretty simple.

I'm pretty sure the reason why that happened with the snow monsters was because heaven took the opportunity to infuse it's will alongside reckless savage when Fang Yuan was trying to increase his strength path attainment. Regardless I'm not going to stay faithful to the original work. It's far too complex for me to remember everything so I'll tweak it to suit the direction of this story.

Fang Yuan uses heaven and earth style to refine Gu since it's the one he knows the most about via Lang Ya blessed land. The formation he created doesn't use his own strength but the strength of the dao marks in Hu Immortal blessed land. It's basically a weaker version of Lang Ya's Refinement Cauldron.
