Within 7 meters, someone with a knife can attack faster than most people can draw and fire a pistol. It has been shown many times, even with expert quickdraw shooters. There many videos available to lookup. Obviously not the case if the pistol is already drawn. Which is why so many police draw their weapon early, if within 25 feet of a threatening or suspicious person.
