I can visualize that a bit but wouldn't they have to be literally hugging in that case?

This "trick" shouldn't be possible. How long is his leg that his foot can reach someone's ankle? I mean, both of them are fighting with swords, or in the previous fights' cases, a warhammer and a mace. The MC would be right in his enemies' personal space, which isn't ideal for both of them. Also, stances/footing and specifically footwork are one of the foundations of fighting. Let's say his doing this trick when they're locking swords or extremely close to each other, his opponent can just shove him since his footing's all messed up trying to trip his opponent!
