People aren't actually sympathetic. They are just pretending to be. Either to fit in, for attention, or for money. Humans are inherently selfish creatures, and sure, while you may think most feel some sort of empathy, that is mostly something superficial, only built into humans by school, media, and parents.

How would people even know that he lacks empathy? Almost everyone today lacks empathy, it's nothing new or unique.
