I like the first person as a limited thing, it allows more of a internal idea of what's going on in Noah's head and his actions. specially if it's to highlight the importance of the moment and the path forwards.

I believe he did not kill it, he just got lucky and scratched it a little moments before it drew it's last breath from whatever really killed it.
