Best description of humanity that I could remember is the one from Hellboy... in which humans have a void in them that they pour everything in to but never gets filled. Having part of the reason going away from humanity for the one I love would definitely be a bonus.

Just guessing but... maybe they can relate to it in some way because in real life, when you're too good at something and don't have the right background... it would just lead on isolation or bullying. Crab mentality is still prominent in some societies.
