Chapter 6: Danger in the Depths

The low, rumbling growl echoed through the chamber again, sending a chill down Ethan's spine. His grip tightened around the handle of his pickaxe as his eyes darted through the shadows, trying to make sense of the faint movement at the far end of the room.

Something's here, he thought, his pulse quickening. The chamber had felt abandoned just moments before, but now, it was alive with tension—charged with an energy that made his skin prickle.

Ethan took a cautious step back, his back foot shifting to better balance himself. He wasn't a fighter. In fact, he had intentionally avoided any situations that might require physical confrontation, preferring to let others handle the more dangerous tasks. But this... this was different. He was alone, deep underground, far from the safety of the town or even the other miners.

I need to get out of here, he told himself, eyeing the narrow tunnel he had come through. The crystals he had gathered were already stored in his Inventory, and he had no reason to stick around. Whatever was lurking in the shadows, he had no desire to meet it.

But even as he began to move toward the tunnel, the sound of stone scraping against stone stopped him in his tracks. His heart pounded in his chest as he turned back toward the source of the noise.

Out of the darkness, a figure emerged—a massive, hulking creature that seemed to be made entirely of rock and stone. Its body was rough and jagged, like the walls of the tunnel itself, and its eyes glowed faintly with a deep, molten red. The creature's movements were slow but deliberate, each step shaking the ground beneath Ethan's feet.

What the hell is that? Ethan thought, his mind racing.

He quickly activated Identify, hoping the system could tell him what he was dealing with.

[Identify: Earth Elemental. Tier: Low. Weakness: Magic.]

An Earth Elemental. Ethan's mind flashed back to some of the stories he had heard about elementals—beings made from the very materials they inhabited, often tasked with protecting certain areas or treasures. This one must have been guarding the crystals he had just removed from the chamber.

Great, Ethan thought bitterly. I must have set it off when I took the Aetherite.

The creature rumbled again, its deep, resonant growl vibrating through the chamber. It wasn't moving quickly, but its sheer size and strength made it clear that Ethan was no match for it in a direct fight. Worse, his system had identified its weakness as magic—something Ethan didn't yet have access to.

I can't fight this thing... but I might be able to outmaneuver it.

Ethan's mind worked quickly, assessing the situation. The tunnel behind him was narrow and would slow the creature down, but it was unstable. One wrong move could trigger a collapse, and he wasn't eager to find out what it was like to be buried alive under tons of rock.

Still, it was his best option.

He turned and bolted for the tunnel, his feet pounding against the stone as he ran. Behind him, the elemental let out a deafening roar, its heavy footsteps shaking the ground with every step as it lumbered after him.

Ethan's breath came in quick, sharp bursts as he raced through the narrow passage, his hands skimming the rough walls to keep his balance. The tunnel twisted and turned, forcing him to slow down just enough to avoid tripping over the uneven floor. Behind him, the elemental's massive form crashed into the tunnel, the sound of crumbling rock filling the air as it tried to force its way through.

Come on, come on, Ethan thought, his mind racing. He could hear the stone scraping and shifting as the elemental struggled to squeeze its bulk into the narrow space. It was buying him time, but not much.

The tunnel began to shake violently, small chunks of rock falling from the ceiling as the elementals' movements disturbed the fragile balance of the underground structure. Ethan glanced back, his heart skipping a beat as he saw the cracks forming in the walls around the creature.

The elemental roared again, and Ethan felt the tunnel shift beneath his feet.

It's going to collapse!

Without thinking, he activated Earth Sense, desperately trying to find the weak points in the tunnel before it was too late.

[Earth Sense Activated]

The system flickered to life, and Ethan's mind was flooded with information. The tunnel's structure was weak, held together by thin veins of rock that were barely stable. But there—a few feet ahead—was a section of the tunnel where the stone was thicker, more solid. If he could make it to that point, he might have a chance.

Ethan pushed himself harder, his legs burning as he sprinted toward the stable section of the tunnel. Behind him, the sound of cracking stone grew louder, the elemental's weight causing more and more of the tunnel to collapse in on itself.

Just as he reached the stable ground, Ethan heard a deafening crash. He turned just in time to see the tunnel behind him cave in, burying the Earth Elemental under a massive pile of rubble.

For a moment, there was nothing but silence. The tunnel was still, save for the faint sound of dust settling. Ethan stood there, his chest heaving as he tried to catch his breath. His hands trembled slightly, the adrenaline still coursing through his veins.

That... was too close, he thought, wiping the sweat from his brow.

He looked back at the collapsed tunnel, knowing that there was no way to return to the chamber now. The crystals he had gathered were safely stored in his Inventory, but the path he had taken was now completely sealed off. He would have to find another way out.

With a deep breath, Ethan turned and made his way back toward the main tunnels. His mind was still racing, trying to process what had just happened. He had narrowly escaped the Earth Elemental, but the encounter had taught him a valuable lesson—there were dangers in this world that he wasn't prepared for yet.

As he walked, Ethan couldn't help but think about the Aetherite Crystals he had found. They were extremely rare, and their spatial affinity meant they could be used in powerful enchantments. With those crystals, he could sell them through the system and earn enough system currency to finally purchase the Basic Magic Rune Training.

The thought of learning magic filled him with excitement. The runes, the spells, the power—it was all within reach now. He just needed to sell the crystals and take that first step.

But there was still the matter of finding a way out of the mines without drawing attention to himself. If anyone found out about the Aetherite or the Earth Elemental, it could complicate things. He needed to be discreet.

As he approached the more populated parts of the mine, Ethan deactivated Earth Sense and slowed his pace, blending in with the other miners who were finishing up their shifts. No one seemed to notice him, which was exactly how he wanted it.

Back in the privacy of his abandoned cave, Ethan sat down and opened his system interface. The familiar blue screen flickered to life, displaying his Inventory and the five Aetherite Crystals he had collected.

This is it, he thought, a small smile creeping across his face. This is the start of something big.

He navigated to the Store tab, his heart racing as he selected the option to sell the crystals.

[Sell Materials: Aetherite Crystals x5 – Value: 50 system currency each] [Total Sale: 250 system currency]

Ethan's eyes widened as the transaction completed. 250 system currency. It was more than he had expected—enough to buy the Basic Magic Rune Training with some left over.

Without hesitating, he navigated to the Store and selected the ability he had been waiting for.

[Purchase: Basic Magic Rune Training – Cost: 500 system currency. Transaction successful.]

A surge of excitement ran through him as the system processed the purchase. He felt a strange, tingling sensation in the back of his mind as new information flooded his thoughts—the shapes of the runes, the meanings behind them, and the way they channeled the raw forces of magic.

This is just the beginning, he thought, his mind racing with possibilities.

He opened his Status Sheet to check his progress.
