Chapter 139: Arrival in Sootopolis City

After bidding farewell to Elder Sigourney, Rex, Ash, and their companions continued their journey, leaving the giant Claydol as a memory. They knew that such a terrifying power was beyond their reach and had no desire to possess it.

The following journey wasn't as thrilling, but they met a dancer named Sayuri with her Loudred. Through a stroke of luck, Brock's Lombre evolved into a Ludicolo and learned the move Seed Bomb.

They also witnessed the underground lake in the Trapinch maze. Countless Trapinch evolved into Vibrava above this subterranean lake, a sight Rex would never forget.

They met an Absol misunderstood by villagers while trying to save its village. There was also Ash's Snorunt, who stole his Gym Badge out of loneliness but eventually chose to follow him willingly, and a Ralts who made a promise with Max.

Although they experienced much while crossing Izabe Island, Rex didn't actively participate, observing events unfold from a distance.

Traveling with Ash and the others provided opportunities to encounter rare Pokémon and events, but Rex was growing tired of this lifestyle.

He planned to return to his family farm after challenging the Sootopolis Gym, already missing everything about Rex Farm.

"We should arrive in Sootopolis City by tomorrow morning!"

The group was now on a ferry heading to Sootopolis City. Brock, after consulting a travel guide, announced this to everyone.

"That's great! Finally, we get to challenge the last Gym!" Ash exclaimed, clenching his fist in excitement.

"Rex, are you really not going to travel with us after challenging the Sootopolis Gym?" Max asked, feeling reluctant about his impending departure.

Rex had mentioned his plans to Max earlier, but their time together had made him reluctant to see him go. Plus, he had bonded well with Lapras, making the thought of parting even harder for someone his age.

"Don't be sad, Max. I live in Fallarbor Town, not far from your Petalburg City. You can visit my farm after your travels. I promise it won't disappoint you," Rex comforted him, seeing Max's reluctance to part.

"Rex, can we also visit your farm in the future?" Max shyly asked.

For Max, Rex's maturity and steadiness reminded him of his father, Norman. His care during their journey had made him not want to lose this friend.

"Of course, Max. May, Ash, and Brock are also welcome anytime. Soon, my farm will have a garden of Gracidea flowers!" Rex diverted the conversation to lighten the mood.

Intrigued by the flower garden, everyone expressed their desire to visit Rex's farm, easing the impending sadness and bringing the conversation back to its usual liveliness.

After dinner, Rex returned to his cabin to practice his daily strengthening exercises. His improved physique now allowed him to complete the routine twice, needing the extra effort to achieve the same results as before.

This increased effort was necessary as his enhanced physique made the effects of the exercises diminish. Continuing to improve required more practice until the exercises no longer provided benefits, signaling a need for a new regimen.

However, Rex was relaxed about this, feeling his current fitness was sufficient for most challenges. He didn't aim to become a human tank, as that wasn't his goal.

Rex preferred night exercises for the ease of sleep they provided. A good night's rest ensured he woke up refreshed and energetic, making the next day's tasks easier.

"Finally, we're here!" Ash exclaimed upon reaching the dock.

"Are you going to challenge the Sootopolis Gym right away?" Brock asked.

"Of course! Let's head there quickly!" Ash replied eagerly.

Rex had no objections, but they noticed many people heading towards the central plaza.

"Excuse me, where are you all going?" Ash asked a passerby.

"We're heading to the central plaza for a festival. There'll be a performance by Mr. Juan, the Water Artist!" the passerby explained before continuing on.

"It looks like our Gym challenge will have to wait until after the festival," Rex shrugged.

"That's okay! Mr. Juan's performance must be amazing. Let's go watch!" Max said excitedly, pulling everyone towards the performance.

"Guess we have no choice since Mr. Juan is busy," Ash agreed, reluctantly following.

By the time they reached the plaza, it was packed, forcing them to stand at the back.

The performance area was surrounded by water. The mayor of Sootopolis City gave a brief introduction before announcing the start. A middle-aged man in elaborate attire then appeared, greeted by loud cheers. Rex recognized him as Gym Leader Juan, whose talents justified his popularity.

Juan began by commanding water jets to intertwine, encircling the stage and forming a rainbow above, a stunning display that captivated Max.

Juan then showcased his Water-type Pokémon, most impressively Milotic, shimmering beautifully in the sunlight. This inspired Rex to train his Feebas for evolution.

The magical scenes created by Juan and his Pokémon left the audience spellbound.

During the show, Team Rocket tried to capture Juan's Pokémon but were thwarted by their own strength and Juan's confidence in them.

After the show, Rex and Ash expressed their desire to challenge the Sootopolis Gym. Juan agreed, offering them a boat ride through the city's waterways to the Gym.
