Dermon is a recluse that lives in the countryside of Alkair. Having come from a small humble family of artisans, he moved to a secluded cottage by the green forest of Hermon and the high Aldorian river when he turned sixteen. From then onwards, he stuffed his next ten years with a peaceful and restful life in nature: Take care of the orchard, develop his artistic values, go hunting once in a while, and the sporadic journeys to the nearby city of Tordemm to trade goods, were just some of the more routinary like events in his life. However, no one told him that buying a strange plant off the flea market would turn this relaxed life around. Let's be honest no one would believe you if you went ahead and told them that after planting a weird plant and taking extensive care of it for three months, a plant girl popped into your life. But it happened, and this is how it happened. ~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~•~ Disclaimers: -This book is a side project. "This is all sorts of weird..."
After my chaotic awakening, and a bunch of attempts, I got the plant girl off my wrist. She tried to hold on to it with all her might and may I add; it felt like cuffs being put loosely around it. Now, as early in the day as the rise of the sun across the horizon. I had a monster girl tucked away in my blankets, sitting on my bed, and clenching onto my pillow with the same might she expressed earlier on my wrist.
"What even am I supposed to do with you..." Her gaze was stabbing. It was like she tried to grab my soul and analyze it up close, which, as you all can imagine, is somewhat awkward when you know she is completely naked under those blankets.
"And it seems you can neither talk nor express anything, huh..." That was the strangest thing about this situation. She didn't talk or move, nor even flinch or breathe by the looks of it. It was like having a staring match with a giant size porcelain doll. That, oddly enough, mirrored a plant girl. She was real nonetheless and somehow got here and grabbed my wrist, so for sure she must be aware of her surroundings to be able to sneak into my house.
As I expected no answer to my statement from early, she just looked at me with those deep and big eyes that displayed a beautiful honey-yellow iris that was disturbed by the smallest of dark pupils I have ever seen. However, that's where pretty much all human aspects ended. Her legs had a lot of root-like features. It essentially looked like her legs were morphing into a much closer human resemblance. Although the rest of her body looked like one a girl of that age would have, it was simple to notice that her skin had this yellowish tone to it that only made you doubt the veracity of her being human. Such doubt only bolstered further since I could discern with a quick glance many other crucial details playing against that belief, an example of these being the root-like surface she had instead of skin around the joints of her limbs, the cover which even enveloped the entirety of her neck and clavicle.
"... You ain't going to bite me, are you?" My question went unanswered yet again. Guess I can take that as a no then.
Having uncrossed my arms, I extended my right hand up to her reach, pondering if I could really touch that root-like part of her body. In a doubtful moment of what to do, I chickened out and gently poked her in the front, sending her head back in an even gentler sway, her head rocking back and forth until it lost momentum and stayed put in place yet again, staring at me.
Funnily enough, she didn't react. Her face was still as stoic as it was moments ago, and her mouth was still to this point agape, as she maintained eye contact with me.
"Well, at least you don't bite... That's good info, maybe?" I wished for my rambling to at least make her answer once, but it was to no avail. She wouldn't talk by any means. A fact that only caused me to sigh out of a feeling I didn't even know. Perhaps it was desperation, or maybe an uncanny injection of relived fear.
"Hm... For now, I will wash you and my bed from dirt and then go back to the city and try to find that woman..." It was only logical, right? There isn't much I can do when I don't even know for certain with what I'm even talking to. Well, trying at least.
Having announced my intentions, I took the blankets away from her and promptly after dusted them off outside. Next, I left the blankets hanging by the veranda's railing and hastily went up to my well to fill a bucket with fresh water. All this took me little time as it just was moments for me to be back inside starting a new staring match with the plant girl that hugged onto my pillow whilst I hugged onto the wooden bucket.
Assessing that she was still sat on that spot of my bed, I went ahead and kept on preparing a bath to clean her.
As I did so, I sometimes diverted glances at her while going back and forth outside to fill the basin in the bathroom. It seemed like her eyes tracked not my movements, but the wooden bucket I carried along every time I got back inside. That at least clearly confirmed that she could perfectly discern her surroundings and wasn't some class of mole-like gist.
Having dealt with the simple part of walking back and forth, I stood in front of her, pondering on how to deal with the hard part now. I needed to get her into the basin I filled with water back in the bathroom. It is not as easy as taking the pillow away from her and expecting not to get my wrist grabbed again in the process of dragging her into the bathroom, is it? Yeah, that wrist thing sounds too plausible to try... Mayhap I can change the pillow for a towel?
"..." To hell with it. "Alright, I will take that pillow away from you, okay?" No answer. Before building up the courage of trying to get my pillow back and the idea occurred to me, maybe I could replace the pillow with something else I can afford to wet. Having gone to the bathroom yet again, I brought a towel with me and now was ready to try my plans. Taking a deep breath, I tried the first one I had.
The first one was simple. I gently pinched the pillow from the bottom, trying to slip it out of her grasp. But she didn't let go. Plan number two went as badly as the first, as this time I tried it from the top side of the pillow, gaining the same unyielding result. With her tightening around it like a clam, any attempts at extracting it like that will be useless. That's when I realized I had to change tactic and get the courage to at least touch her.
It was nerving knowing how tedious it was to get rid of her grip around my wrist. What if it happened again and I couldn't get her off this time? Just thinking about it made my bones shiver, and it took me several deep breaths to get hold of my heart beat again. Man, this is the worst I have felt for years now, maybe even worse than that time…
'Son, what even was that? Come on, you interact with Markus and Daniel like nothing, what's wrong with the clients? You gotta be more direct Dermon, the customer ain't going to bite you for being slow.'
Right… I should take it as a task, as if I'm doing my cleaning routine, she ain't going to be bite me.
Having gotten enough mental strength in me, I tried to maneuver her body myself to get her grip off the pillow.
This time she let go of it as soon as I took action with my own hands, instead of expecting her to let go alone. Although...
As I put the cushion where it belonged and had my hand off her wrist, she seemed disgruntled, even if not showing any sentiments. It was noticeable how her mouth became a bit more agape and attempted to reach me with her little arms, almost as if demanding to be held like that.
As soon as I saw it, I got lured to hug her for a second, but my senses thankfully were sharp, and I knew that it probably was wrong to hug a naked monster girl that can't express herself with words. That… That sounds even more degenerate when said like that. Does that make me a freak..?
I shook my head and tried to put my mind in a blank state to focus on the task I had ahead. "Here..." Instead of the hug or wrist grab she might have wanted, I shoved the towel into her arms. I brought it for that after all.
The plant girl grabbed and hugged onto it as she did before with the pillow. I couldn't tell if she was satisfied with this outcome or just reluctantly agreed to the towel offered.
Having defused the grabbing bomb that she was, I picked her up and brought her into the bathroom. I was nervous the whole time, a feeling in the back of my head telling me she might grab onto me instead of the towel. My nerves, however, left as soon as I sat her inside the large wooden basin I half-filled with fresh water. She didn't flinch about it being cold. Perhaps this was one perk of being a plant?
"Hmm..."
Thinking about it, she is a plant right, a sentient at that…
"I will be right back, don't try getting out of here, please."
By that logic, I think it would be more comfortable for her if I washed her with something familiar, like the watering can I have been using to water her these three months, wouldn't it?
Having come outside, I went to the orchard and searched for it between the gardening tools. It took me a while to find it but I did in the end. Now, I just had to fill the watering can before going back inside and to my relief when I came back to the same sight I left the bathroom, the plant girl unmoving inside the basin and nothing trashed.
I noticed then that her eyes instantly diverted their stare at what I held in my hands. The familiar sight of the watering can seemed to awake her from that vegetative state she appeared to be most of the time. Maybe I could force her to react by showing familiar things to her? I should try that later...
"Hmm... I'm going to water you now, alright?" No response. Again. I should forget getting answers from her entirely at this point. I mean, she is a plant, how is she supposed to talk even?
Sighing, I took another towel I had lying around and approached her with both items to clean her off dirt. I started by soaking her body with the watering can, keeping close attention to her reactions. This time at least she closed her eyes. Maybe she was pleased with this? I couldn't tell if I was honest, so I didn't ponder further on her current feelings if she had any. Now Putting down the watering can, I rolled up my sleeves and progressed onto scrubbing the soil off her. She was light, and so it appears to be that it wasn't just by coincidence that her head rocked around so easily before. It was kinda cute in a way to see her swinging along as I cleaned her…
No, focus. I'm not here to admire. Just finish cleaning, dress her up and then go to the city to search for that woman.
"Huh, thinking about it, do I have any old clothes I could spare for you..."
I mumbled this to myself this time, not expecting anything out of the girl in the basin, yet she reacted to my statement, her head tilting slightly to the left while staring at me. This is amazing! Did she understand the concept of clothes, perhaps?
"Hm... Well, first, I should dry you a bit."
No further reaction this time… Doesn't matter, I think I'm growing accustomed to it already.
I sighed while getting up. As stupid as it sounded, I got tired trying to deal with her, it hasn't been even hours since I woke up and yet here I was drained of energy already, how am I going to walk to the city and get back like this? Right, I should figure that one later, first focus on dealing with the plant girl. I now threw the dirty towel into an empty basin to wash it later when I get back home, though thanks to me being so focused on cleaning her have I just now realized I had nothing to dry her with. I used my two only towels already, one being dirty with mud and the other soaking wet. Most probably, this is going to give me a new type of headache.
"Agh... What a pain. Wait here, alright? I will go see what I can get to dry you up."
I pulled her out of the basin and sat her down on the floor to at least let her dry by herself already, in case I couldn't find anything to dry her myself. Though that wasn't necessary. I found some old rags I had lying around that were squeaky clean, although finding them took me several minutes of walking around the house and several more of searching around the wardrobe. While going back, I groaned, thinking about how tedious it is to deal with cleaning someone else. But this annoyance got smashed into smithereens as soon as I walked back into the bathroom, finding the plan girl completely dry and the towel she hugged onto, just sitting there. There wasn't even a puddle of water left below her. Did she suck up all the moisture while I was searching for the rags?
"... I'm not imaging things, am I?" Although I combated the urges before, I couldn't this time.
I needed to try it out and see myself, so I left the rags on top of a shelf and walked back to the basin, into which I threw the dirty towel. Having picked it back up, I gave her a side look, something she returned, curiously looking at what I was about to do. Ignoring the constant stare that stabbed me, I walked back up to the water-filled basin and dipped the towel, cleaning it from all the soil and dirt before taking it out again and turning around to face her.
Taking the dry towel away from her, I replaced it with the one drenched in water. She didn't complain about the change and hugged onto it, anyway. I meanwhile just sat down cross-legged in front of her and waited in silence to see.
Minutes passed in this strange silence that we filled with a staring match, my eyes diverting their gaze towards the towel once in a while. And then it happened. The towel seemed to dry up from the water it previously sucked up. It was essentially the same sight of watching a spilled drink dry on the pavement under the blazing sun, just that this time the factor making the towel dry wasn't heat but a monster girl.
"Huh, that's... That's impressive." It was mesmerizing, it's rare you get to just sit down and watch something dry, moreover as quickly as that!
The plant girl didn't give mind to my fascination. She acted like before. Well, all things considered, she acted like a plant, right?
"Ah, right, clothes... I think I saw my old shirt in the wardrobe."
I got up, realizing I was getting mesmerised by her again. Walking back to my room once again, I searched for said shirt, a simple task to complete, thanks to the shirt being colored with a bright bloody red which stood out from far away. "Here you are."
Having took the shirt with me, I went back to the bathroom and clothed the plant girl. Not before taking the towel away from her to make my job easier. Although I found myself trapped in something I avoided just moments ago, being mesmerized yet again by how baggy it looked on her. I really haven't thought about how big my clothes were compared to her body so the shirt I gave her was at least four or three sizes too big for her, and in the end, it resembled more a poncho than a shirt… I mean, it's rather adorable…
"..." Calm down Dermon, she is a plant. "Well... I will be away now, alright? Don't do weird things like trying to follow me, got it?"
And as expected, no response from her, so I left her be while I prepared to leave for the city.
