摘要

It is the year 2070. Things have changed dramatically and rapidly over the past fifty years. The cause of overpopulation has led to other problems such as poverty, inflation, strikes, market crashes, epidemics, and even deaths. Supplies and resources are running out and can barely support everyone in the country. Because of this, the Sapphires, as the governmental body, has classified everyone in the country into four different rankings: the Highers, the Middles, the Lessers, and the Nothings; all according to their economic backgrounds. Last summer of 2065, eleven year old Margot Wales received a letter from the Sapphires about a governmental plan that involved training potential teenagers to face the world's challenges through simulations and experiments. She doesn't know what the problem is, why it's happening, and how it is to be solved. Five years later, she finds herself as a "Variable" being used by the government. Margot starts to notice a hoax in the government's plan. Will she be able to find a way out – if there really is? [a "The Maze Runner" and "Divergent" crossover]

Chapter 1After the Darkness

For the millionth time, I found myself on all fours on the ground, panting heavily. Sweat was dripping down my neck and forehead, making the strands of my hair wet and sticky. No, I told myself, I can't do this anymore.

I heard a "tsk-tsk" sound from the corner of the room and found Dr. Edwards looking at me sympathetically, the way a father would look at a weak child. His gray eyes were foggy and shielded by his thick-rimmed glasses, and his thin lips were pulled into a small smile. He checked his clipboard and said softly, "Margot, dear, when are you going to cope with the simulation?"

I wiped my mouth with my sleeve. "Just give me more time, Doctor–"

"Margot, Governor Red and the Sapphires will be coming next week to see if you and the other Variables have made any progress," Dr. Edwards interrupted, tapping his ball pen impatiently on his clipboard. "Look, I just can't see any effort coming from you–"

"I am putting effort," I said through gritted teeth, pushing myself up and sitting down cross-legged on the floor. "I just need more time."

"Time is everybody's enemy, Margot. That's Rule One here in the association. The other Variables have been making progress."

"I don't give a crap about those other Variables," I muttered fiercely under my breath. I stood up and grabbed my jacket hanging from the rack on the other side of the room, and walked past a stunned-looking Dr. Edwards. "Thank you for your time and help, Doctor."

"Same place, same time, Margot," he called after me as I shut the door of the simulation room.

Times have changed for the last fifty years. The Sapphires, the government body of our country, serve as the main providers for the people's resources like food, water, shelter and energy. The only thing is, there were so many people in the country that it the government found it difficult to provide needs for each and every one. Overpopulation in the country has been a major problem, which led to other problems such as poverty, strikes, inflation, and other economic situations. Without a choice left, the Sapphires made "rankings" between people– classifying them into four different ranks based on their wealth and socio-economic background, namely: the Highers, the Middles, the Lessers, and the Nothings. They would priorities first to the Highers, since they were the highest rank; and sometimes, if the officials run out of supplies, the Nothings get nothing at all. I'm lucky enough to be a Middle, because things are rougher than before. Survival is necessary, and if you don't live a life out in the world, dying is most probably the only choice left.

I'm Margot Wales, a sixteen-year-old from the year 2070. This is my story.

OLD-WORLD EXTRA

{Check out my new novel, Misunderstood Villain: Heroines Mourn My Death} 'Born In Ruins' was a forgettable read. That was the only way Emir could describe the pages of the novel he had found himself reincarnated into. The young man barely knew anything, but the snippets he had recalled only caused him unending sorrow... As what awaited him was only tragedy and an early death. It was a depressing story, one that he had planned to flip on its head—all for his salvation. — In this post-apocalyptic world, monsters fought humans and cyborgs in a battle for survival on a scale greater than ever before. A world where innocence and death were a luxury, where the line between heroes and villains was razor-thin. Within its expanse, 'Ancient Clans,' 'Galactic Federations,' 'Factions', and 'Corporations' presided over colossal 'Ruins' that dwarfed the concept of life itself. Survivors of the 'Third World War' continuously dove into the 'Old World,' 'Hunting' for 'Relics' in any ruin that they could find on Earth, desperate to reclaim 'Lost' technology, to stand a fighting chance against the inevitable. But it appeared that 'Earthkind' had met their match. …However, Emir would never allow that fate to take its course. — Emir unraveled layers of the tale and realized the truth of the world. He acquainted himself with the rules of this game before it fully consumed him. And now... no longer content with mere survival, he sought to dominate over the very fabric of this unforgiving universe. Emir shall rise from the pawn he once was, seeking to unravel the mysteries that hounded him. The boundaries of 'Aether,' his father’s disappearance, the noose hanging above his family’s head, and of course… his starless destiny, a fate he longed to control. This pursuit would earn him the epithet: "Prince Of The Fallen." ---------------------------------------------- *Tags: Reincarnation ;), Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Magical Realism, Academy (Volume 3), Romance, Apocalypse, {Anti-Hero. Villain.} *Expect this novel to start slowly; it begins ramping up at the halfway point of volume 1. *The Magic System is introduced at the end of volume 1, read my review and Auxiliary chapter for more on that. *Warning: The main characters have emotions like proper humans. So don't expect your usual emo kid as the MC and come complaining later.
