Chapter 22: Awakening Potential
Zed's muscles screamed in protest as he fought against the invisible resistance. He pushed forward, his legs pumping hard as he tried to keep up with the holographic opponents that materialized around him. Sweat beaded on his forehead, his breath coming in ragged gasps. The AR-imposed resistance [AR-imposed resistance: Augmented Reality technology that creates virtual obstacles and resistance for physical training] felt like an invisible force field, pushing against his every move. Zed's muscles burned as he fought through the simulated defense, his mind racing to keep up with Jadyn's rapid-fire commands.
"Crossover! [Crossover: A basketball dribbling technique used to change directions quickly and potentially evade defenders] Now spin! [Spin move: A basketball maneuver where a player quickly rotates their body to evade a defender while maintaining control of the ball] Drive to the hoop!" Jadyn's voice cracked like a whip, each order carrying an undercurrent of the tension between them.
Zed's body responded on instinct, muscle memory kicking in despite months of inactivity. He dribbled hard, the ball an extension of his arm as he executed a lightning-fast crossover. The holographic defender stumbled, and Zed seized the opportunity, spinning past another virtual opponent with a grace that belied his recent struggles.
As he drove towards the hoop, time seemed to slow. Zed could feel every bead of sweat on his skin, hear the pounding of his heart in his ears. The familiar warmth he'd felt earlier began to spread through his body, starting in his core and radiating outwards. It was as if something was awakening inside him, a dormant power stirring to life.
Jadyn watched, her professional mask slipping for a moment as she witnessed the transformation. Zed's movements became fluid, almost ethereal. The AR resistance that had challenged him moments ago now seemed to bend around him, as if recognizing a superior force.
With a burst of speed that surprised even himself, Zed leapt towards the hoop. For a split second, he felt weightless, suspended in mid-air. The warmth inside him crescendoed, and suddenly, his vision shifted. The world around him took on a strange, shimmering quality, as if he could see beyond the physical plane.
In that moment of clarity, Zed saw not just the holographic defenders, but faint outlines of potential futures – trajectories, movements, possibilities. Without conscious thought, his body adjusted mid-air, twisting to avoid a block he'd sensed rather than seen.
The ball left his hands, arcing towards the hoop with unerring precision. As it swished through the net, the strange vision faded, reality snapping back into focus. Zed landed hard, his legs wobbling beneath him as the exertion and the bizarre experience caught up with him.
Jadyn's eyes were wide, a mix of awe and confusion on her face. "Zed," she breathed, "what was that?"
Before he could answer, a sharp pain lanced through his left knee. Zed stumbled, barely catching himself before he hit the ground. The warmth that had filled him moments ago dissipated, leaving him feeling hollow and drained.
"I'm fine," he growled through gritted teeth, more to convince himself than Jadyn. He pushed himself back to his feet, swaying slightly but determined to continue.
Jadyn stepped forward, concern overriding her earlier professional detachment. "That's enough for today," she said firmly, deactivating the AR system. The holographic court and defenders vanished, leaving them alone in the suddenly quiet training room.
Zed opened his mouth to protest, but Jadyn cut him off with a sharp look. "No arguments. We need to get you to the Advanced Terminal [Advanced Terminal: A futuristic transportation hub]. To scale up your previous training."]
"What do you mean?" Zed asked, confusion and curiosity warring with his frustration at the interrupted session. "Are there any training gears apart from BCI?"
Jadyn's expression was unreadable as she turned towards the exit. "You'll see when we get there. Come on."
As they made their way out of the training room, Zed's mind raced. What had happened during that intense moment? The warmth, the strange vision, the surge of power – it was unlike anything he'd experienced before. And what could be waiting for him at the Advanced Terminal that had Jadyn so on edge?
Little did Zed know, as he limped alongside Jadyn towards the Transportation Terminal, that the journey ahead would challenge everything he thought he knew about himself, his abilities, and the very nature of the game he loved. The true test was only just beginning.
