Beth bit at her nails, nervous because of the silence from Chester. As far as she knew, Dorothy was still alive and well when she should not be. If Chester had betrayed her, then she could kiss her good life goodbye since the wedding had not come yet.
The Humphrey family doctor could come any day now and expose her secret. Dorothy had to die soon.
"Should we just speed up the wedding? It would not be my dream wedding but it is better than nothing," Beth considered.
She would have to face her friends making light of the fact the wedding wasn't as grand as she made it out to be, but having one was better than just staying as Jack's woman.
Beth watched from a window as Jack's carriage finally returned. They had left on a bad note and after some thought, Beth knew she had to make it right. Her lie was easy to go on for so long because she had Jack in her hands. Once he started to be annoyed by her, then she was out of there.
