Chapter 196: Darkness Descends

"Father, I am ready."

As Eileen processed this statement, John Wick also stood up.

York glanced at him.

Dressed in clergy attire but equipped with a SCAR rifle and holding a viper pistol, with military night vision goggles around his neck. This was the gear specially prepared for this killer, primarily because monsters were ultimately more challenging than regular people, especially in dark environments.

However, combining this with the 'Speed Chase' series he had seen in his previous life, the scene felt oddly out of place.

"Ready to experience another world?" York asked, suppressing the odd feeling in his heart.

John Wick, silent, his eyes began to change, exuding a dangerous aura.

This made Eileen beside him take a sidelong glance, wondering where the priest had found this new employee.

York glanced at the magazines beside John Wick. Based on his previous guess, John probably couldn't harness the full power of these holy bullets, just the firepower of the guns themselves.

"We might fight in the dark, so you take the lead, and I'll cover you."

York's plan remained unchanged. He continued, "The monster might be fast, you'll need to anticipate its movements."

John Wick squeezed the viper pistol, his eyes sharp and spirited, nodding.

"Okay, Father."

Upon hearing this, York looked at Reston. "Mr. Reston, can you take your wife out when we go in? I'm afraid our fight might affect you."

"Yeah!"

Reston, seeing the fully armed scene, grew more nervous.

"Okay, let's go."

York led the way, with everyone heading towards the house.

As they got closer, York's senses were fully alert, and the real-time 3D map in his mind began to change with the incoming information.

In the house's 3D map, York could clearly see two figures.

One was a humanoid busy with something, holding a gun – probably a shotgun.

York bypassed Reston's wife and focused on the other strange shape.

Slight friction and the breathing of a beast instantly located the monster, leaving nothing hidden.

The 3D map showed a spider-like form, coiled on the basement ceiling, just like a real spider clinging tightly there.

"This is the monster's true form? Not bad, enough to trigger the requirement."

A glint of seeing a precious target flashed in York's eyes.

At that moment, a random mission was triggered.

[Condition met: Random mission triggered]

[Mission requirement: Exterminate the dark monster]

[Mission reward: +4 attribute points]

[Accept/Decline]

With the mechanical sound echoing in his ear, York stopped in front of the closed front door, mentally accepting.

[Acceptance successful] "Open the door."

Hearing this, Reston hurriedly came out, inserting the key into the lock. However, the door had been locked from the inside.

Reston's face showed anxiety, looking at the priest.

"Father."

"It's okay, your wife is still safe, just doing something." York, staring at the real-time 3D map, spoke calmly.

"Hammer the door. We are here, no need to worry about making noise."

Reston's spirits lifted; he had always feared making noise that might affect the priest's actions.

"Bang!"

"Bang!"

The sound of hammering the door drew attention inside.

In York's mind, the woman immediately stopped her busy actions, her hands holding a gun aimed at the door, shouting in a startled voice.

"Who is it?"

"It's me! Heya!" Reston called.

York noticed the woman named Heya seemingly relieved, though still vigilant, as she walked to the door, even peeking through the peephole.

"A rare wise person."

York's gaze was level, seeing through the door, the woman inside frowned.

"I thought you wouldn't come back!"

As her voice echoed, the door clicked open.

York finally saw the woman's true face.

Her hair, seemingly unwashed for a long time, shone greasily under the candlelight, appearing very disheveled. Her face was sickly pale with dark circles under her eyes, but her expression was determined and alert.

York thought of a phrase, "A mother's strength."

The woman raised her shotgun again, asking Reston.

"So, who are these people?"

Reston, flustered, quickly pulled his wife into the cluttered, candlelit house, explaining everything to calm her down.

"Do they believe us?" Heya looked towards the door.

The priest's demeanor was indeed special, and she didn't know why, but just one look at him made her tense body suddenly relax.

For this alone, she believed what her husband said.

"Yes." Reston said, "You should come out with me, don't interfere with the Father's actions. I'm afraid you'll get hurt, I can't lose you again."

"No! I want to stay! To see it with my own eyes for Annie and the others!"

Heya bit her lip, her heart complex as she looked at the silent Reston, then walked towards the door, carrying the shotgun.

Her face showed a mix of relaxation and ferocity as she stopped in front of York, her voice trembling.

"Father, thank you for believing in us, for helping us."

She raised her head to look at the calm priest, then pleaded.

"But can I see the monster die with my own eyes? I want to see it dead! Otherwise, I don't know how to face my daughters…"

Under the candlelit foyer, York saw only determination and resilience on the woman's face, sighing inwardly.

He knew that people like her were driven by a single obsession; otherwise, they would be like living dead.

"I can let you stay, but you can only watch until we are done."

Looking at the woman, York said seriously, "Can you do that?"

Heya nodded blankly.

"Then fine, everyone stays." York led the silent John Wick and Eileen inside.

"Eileen, keep an eye on them."

York's words fell, and Eileen gestured for Reston and Heya to come stand behind.

Everyone in place.

York scanned the surrounding candles and the traps set by the woman.

The trap was simple: a wire connected to a shotgun, set to fire if the monster touched it.

In his eyes, this ordinary firepower was probably insufficient against the dark monster worthy of a four-point reward. The woman's actions were akin to seeking death.

"John, get ready."

John Wick slowly put on his military night vision goggles.

The next second, to everyone's confusion except Eileen, all the candles simultaneously went out.

Darkness began to descend...

Brothers, I really don't want to update less; I truly wish I could do more, no joke.

But subtracting work hours, there's only so little spare time left to write after coming home from work. I haven't had personal time in a long time, all of it spent writing.

Why I post so late at night is because I write fresh after getting home from work until I reach a basic 4000 characters before posting, with basically no backlog.

If my job were more relaxed, allowing me to sneak in some writing, it would be great, but unfortunately, my situation doesn't permit it. Those full-time writers or ones with easy jobs are not in my condition.

I wish I could go full-time, but my abilities don't allow it. I know this book's quality relies solely on the theme. I lack in literary skills, writing style, and more, only striving to maintain smoothness and keep updating until it concludes properly.

Tomorrow, three chapters, to make up for the one I missed earlier.
