Chapter 386: Dalaran's New "Scam"

If there is a place in the human kingdom that can be called a miracle, it is Dalaran.

This splendid city, located on the island of Krosus in the middle of Lake Lordamere, embodies wisdom, power, magnificence, elegance, art, and mystery, making it the brightest pearl of the entire continent of Lordaeron.

Once, almost all human mages in the world studied their arcane arts here, having learned from the high elves, while the mysterious and elegant white towers scattered throughout the city signified the mages' wisdom, ambition, status, and power.

The establishment of Dalaran dates back thousands of years.

During the tribal era of humanity, the rulers of the Lordaeron continent were still the trolls of the Amani Empire.

The ancestors of the high elves crossed the sea and established their own magical kingdom, Quel'Thalas, on the continent.

However, soon after, Quel'Thalas and the Amani Empire came into conflict over territorial expansion, leading to a war that lasted for thousands of years.

This war lasted over four thousand years.

Although the high elves possessed powerful magic, they could not reproduce as rapidly as humans and trolls, ultimately nearly being overwhelmed by the Amani trolls.

In desperation, they sought out the recently unified human tribes' Emperor, Thoradin, and allied with him in exchange for teaching humans the secrets of magic.

Ultimately, the coalition of humans and high elves decisively defeated the Amani Empire, ending the trolls' rule over the Lordaeron continent.

Those initial human mages who learned the mysteries of magic from the high elves gathered together and established their own city—Dalaran.

Due to Dalaran's extremely open policies regarding the use of magic, it gradually became the center of magical studies and experimentation in Lordaeron and the world.

Even when compared to their magical teachers—the high elves' Silvermoon City—it was not inferior; some high elves even came to Dalaran, becoming a part of it.

Unlike the various magical schools in the Harry Potter world—perhaps because the wizards in Harry Potter's world learned within a Muggle educational system—Dalaran's magical heritage is passed down through the mentorship of masters teaching apprentices.

It is similar to professors mentoring graduate or doctoral students at a university, or traditional artisans training apprentices.

In Dalaran, the transmission of magic is primarily organized around mentors.

Here, any accomplished mage can stand on their own, becoming a mentor and recruiting talented magical apprentices.

They share their insights on magic with their apprentices, who, in turn, take on roles as experimental assistants or servants, providing support to their mentors until they graduate.

Of course, as a renowned center of magical study, Dalaran boasts not only countless mages qualified to become mentors but also a wealth of public education and academic resources.

This is one of the reasons it attracts mages from all over the world.

Dalaran possesses what is arguably the most extensive library in the world, where countless magical knowledge is made available to every eligible individual.

Meanwhile, countless new magical theories and achievements are born here and exchanged among mages.

Because the mages of Dalaran have long existed in a relatively peaceful environment, the reputation and status of a mage in this city are determined not only by their powerful magical abilities but also by their academic achievements.

Of course, most mages with remarkable scholarly accomplishments also possess significant magical power; after all, the power of magic comes from wisdom.

One of the six councils of the ruling organization of Dalaran, the Kirin Tor, the Grand Mage Antonidas was known as a genius in his youth.

At the age of twelve, he published a paper titled "The Application of Time-Traveling Theory in Precise Magical Practice," for which he received the Kirin Tor's Sash of Supreme Wisdom—making him the youngest recipient in the award's history.

Many other renowned mages have, to varying degrees, their unique accomplishments as well.

In other words, in most cases, the upper echelons of Dalaran can essentially be considered magical geniuses.

Recently, the mages of Dalaran have once again witnessed the rise of a young genius.

This young mage is incredibly young—not an error, as he appears to be only fifteen or sixteen years old.

Most mages at this age are merely magical apprentices under the tutelage of some mage.

However, this young mage has achieved quite terrifying accomplishments at this age—he has nearly overturned Dalaran's arcane magical system.

In the world of Warcraft, magic—or arcane magic—is generally divided into nine schools.

These nine schools consist of the protective school specializing in shields and knots, the spell school that can summon items and creatures, the prophecy school that can obtain information from long distances or even the future.

The enchanting school that can imbue objects with magical effects, the illusion school that can create illusions and phantoms, the necromancy school studying the control of the dead, the transformation school that manipulates changes in time and space.

The alchemy school that creates incredible magical items, and the evocation school that manipulates and transforms energy.

These nine schools of magic encompass nearly all arcane magic; any new type of magic cannot escape this system.

Some mages have attempted to break through this limitation, but regardless of how talented or knowledgeable they are, they have all failed without exception.

Ultimately, the existence of these nine schools has become basic common knowledge in arcane magic.

Mages once believed this knowledge would always remain true.

Until recently...

A young mage, having arrived in Dalaran and studied for less than a year, boldly proclaimed that he had discovered a new type of magic that deviated from the existing magical system.

At first, the mages dismissed this news as just another gimmick from a small-time character trying to attract attention or as a trick from some con artist.

Almost no one took it seriously; every year in Dalaran, there are individuals like this who come up with outrageous new ideas or theories, attempting to fool some unsuspecting magical apprentices or eager young people wanting to become mages, or to swindle funding from some mage.

Most of these individuals end up leaving Dalaran in disgrace, although a few lucky ones might find some gullible benefactor. However, such fraudulent schemes typically do not last long.

This time, the onlookers unanimously believed that this new con artist was bound to fail—he was making claims that were far too grand, easily seen through by anyone with even a basic understanding of magic.

Some female mages even lamented for this "little con artist," noting that with such good looks, he could easily become a favored guest among female mages and nobles instead of resorting to such childish scams.

However, they were soon proven wrong.

At the young mage's academic presentation, those bored mages who had come to watch the spectacle were astonished to find that the young mage transformed the podium into a giant cow before their eyes and turned a set of hanging lanterns into a flock of nightingales, performing a beautiful serenade in the classroom.

Only then did they realize that this "scam" might indeed be real.
