Nan Hua's answer made it clear that she didn't have any close relationship with Ruan Xian Xie. People's attention and time was limited. They had no time to care about those who were far away from them and those whom they didn't know. 

They have compassion and feelings. 

But they couldn't possibly care for everyone in the entire world. 

Their time and attention was limited to those around them whom they truly care for. 

So even if Nan Hua's answer might be chilling for some people, it was normal for most people. How many cousins and distant cousins do you have? Can you care for each and every single one of them?

If there were only one or two, then it might be possible. 

But if there were more than 10 of them, it would be a bit harder to say that you could pay attention to them all the time.

Caring about their affairs would be very demanding and tiring.
