Jake's POV
It was nearly painful to drop Ripley off at her front door last night. He was dreading pulling into her driveway and walking her to the door. He was so close to having her all to himself in the loveliest way. He didn't want to let the night end.
But he would be a gentleman.
Jake shut the truck off and did his best not to drag his feet up to Ripley's front door. He could still smell the stench of that villain. Ripley had filled him in some, telling him about how Cory was her childhood best friend. Jake could barely keep the hair from standing up on the back of his neck. If he'd been in his wolf body, his hackles would have risen instantly.
But Cory's scent was hours old at this point.
She was safe.
"Thank you for giving this pitiful criminal a chance," she told him quietly, looking up at him with doe eyes.
"Thanks for giving me a second chance," he chuckled, ducking down to kiss her again.
