“We’ll see—”

Turning to my brother, she asks, “Did he show you the picture? Such an attractiveman, his Timothy.”

Oh God.Joey gives me a quizzical look. “I don’t think I’ve seen it. You have it with you?”

My reply is curt. “No.”

“It’s in his wallet,” Mom offers. “Ask him to show you after dinner.”

“We’re going out after dinner.” I tear my knife through the roast on my plate and refuse to look at either of them. Before she can ask, I add, “Nothing fancy, Mom, just going out for drinks. Wildwood isn’t exactly bustling this time of the year.”

“Don’t stay out too late,” she cautions.

Joey starts, “We won’t—”

But I cut him off. “Don’t wait up.”
