“How’s the foot?” I asked him.
He shrugged. “It’s okay.”
“I see you’ve got a different boot now. Any easier to walk with it?”
“A bit.”
I was saved from having to pry more conversation out of him by Grace, who held up her arms and blew a raspberry. I hunkered down to almost her level and blew a raspberry back at her, which made her laugh. “You remembered Uncle Mike then?” I unfastened her from her baby carrier and lifted her aloft.
Facing Cory again, I asked, “What you reckon are the Lightning’s chances today?”
Cory shrugged. “Dunno.”
Sighing, and knowing I had to address the elephant in the room, or rather on the side-lines, I said, “I’m sorry about what Em did. I love my twin but she doesn’t know when she’s on to a good thing and to stick with it.”
“You think I’m a good thing?” Did Cory crack a smile?
“A lot better than the ones who’ve come after you.”
His smile increased.
“Not that that would be difficult.”
