"Alright, what about you?"
After confirming everything with Izuku, Endeavor turned to the next problem child and asked.
"Rather than what I can do, I came to find out what I can't!"
"You sure can talk, can't you!!" Burnin laughed loudly, annoying the hell out of Katsuki.
"Can you shut up!? What are you even doing here!?" He continued shouting before eventually calming himself, "I'm being serious, dammit."
"My quirk, 'explosion' lets me do anything I want it to do. Even with just a single quirk, I can become the strongest."
It was apparent what Katsuki was referring to when he said 'a single quirk'. He wasn't happy that Izuku got a quirk when he was fourteen, and sure as hell was not pleased when he gained another quirk during his fight.
"But I've learned that pure strength isn't enough to become strong. To surpass the number one hero, I came here to find what I'm missing."
"How cheeky...you came to the number one hero to surpass the number one hero..." Shido snickered at Katsuki's answer.
"Shut up!"
Ignoring Shido, Endeavor looked hard at Katsuki before eventually saying, "Very well. With that, let's head straight to..."
Endeavor turned around and was about to leave when Shoto suddenly spoke, "What about my turn?"
"Huh!? What are you talking about!? Your goal is Flashfire, right!?"
"After years of having my quirk beaten into me by you as a kid, I limited myself to only my right side in battle. Looking back, it was unavoidable. My resentment for you outweighed anything else." Shoto ignored Endeavor's words and started telling his story, "But after I entered UA and began competing with these guys...and everyone else...my eyes were opened. Endeavor."
Shoto looked at his father in the eye, refusing to back down.
"In the end, I'm acting exactly how you wanted me to act. But remember this. The person I strive to be...is the hero I once watched on TV with my mother and siblings. I came here of my own free will to grow as an inexperienced hero and become a person worthy of the title of 'hero'. I came here to use you. Sorry, but it was too convenient not to, number one. So stop trying to act all fatherlike with me in front of my friends."
After Shoto finished his speech, the tension in the air got so thick that if Shido took out a knife, he would be able to feel it as he cut the atmosphere.
Even Shido, Katsuki, and Burnin, the three most hyper people there, didn't dare to utter a word.
"Alright." Endeavor eventually turned around and said. Though no one could detect it, Endeavor's voice was a little shaky from his son's harsh words.
Walking out of the agency and into the open streets, Endeavor started formally teaching the three interns.
"I'll train all three of you as heroes. Rescue. Evacuation. And suppression. These are the three fundamentals required of all heroes. Most agencies are established on a foundation of either 'rescue' or 'suppression'."
"Yep! There are some exceptions, though, like Mirko, who mainly deals with the suppression of villains. Or me, who also mainly deals with suppression even if I do rescue jobs better. As for evacuation, that is not my thing."
Endeavor nodded and continued, "What Phantom said was correct. Small agencies can only afford to deal with one of the three as they wouldn't have enough manpower to do with all three. If you're working solo like Phantom and Mirko, then suppression would be their primary job. They would leave rescue and evacuation to the others who would have better quirks to deal with that."
"However, my agency is not the same. We are grounded in all three of these fundamentals because of two crucial details. We have quirks that can deal with all three, and we have enough manpower to do so."
"As a hero, you must memorize every last detail about your jurisdiction. Don't let a single irregularity slip by. The moment you find something suspicious, just go and check it unless your instincts tell you not to." Shido warned, "As your hero career progresses, the one thing you can trust is your instincts. Like how Endeavor managed to find the glass manipulation old man from a mile away, his instincts are powerful."
"As a hero, you should also be on-site faster than anyone else. Minimize all casualties by keeping all citizens as far away as possible. For quirks that are super destructive like ours, it's imperative to note the last point. You don't want to accidentally harm civilians when fighting against villains."
Endeavor continued to talk, not turning back to face them at all.
"These are the basics of basics: parallel processing and unparalleled speed. When I'm done, these will all be natural to you. It's all about putting together what you've gained. In UA, you've 'perseverance'. And now, you will gain 'experience'. Keep stacking one experience after another. And the three of you will overcome your 'challenges' with experience. During this winter break, show me..."
"...that you can eliminate heroes even faster than me."
"Eh? You want them to surpass the number one hero at their second internship? You've set some high expectations..."
That was what Shido said, but his thinking process was the same as Endeavor's. He had a feeling that he would be forced to go away soon, so before he was gone, his job was to ensure that the interns, his precious students, would all be ready to face the world.
Walking behind the group, a pale green orb appeared floating above his palm.
"It's almost done..." Shido muttered as he looked at the last strand of grey etched on the orb, "Then if Eri wants..."
"No." Shido hurriedly shook his head. He wouldn't force this on Eri. If he asked directly, Shido was almost sure that Eri would accept this without any hesitation whatsoever, even if she knows that he would hold a degree of authority in regulating the distribution of power within her.
That would mean Shido would get to decide whether she should have the power or not, implying that Eri would entrust her very life to Shido.
If Shido was on the receiving end, he would definitely have accepted it without hesitation. This was the extent of the love and the trust he has for her.
But he wasn't.
He would never know what it was like to place his life in the hands of others.
How would it feel?
Would he feel secure knowing that his life was bounded and controlled by someone else?
Would his mentality change?
And most importantly, would his 'love' for her change if he ever became under the control of Eri?
He kept the orb inside his shadow realm before hurriedly catching up with the group.
Those were thoughts for later. Shido still had at least a month before war erupts. Until then, he would figure out a way to let Eri decide without his interference.
Suppressing his thoughts, he let out a smile as he flew ahead of Endeavor towards a hit-and-runner before freezing the right side of the road while knocking over the motorcycle he was on.
"You guys were too slow~," Shido said as the three interns just arrived. Endeavor had already reached the moment Shido let out the block of ice, and choosing not to melt it, he just flew to the left of the hit-and-runner and apprehended him.
"Buzz off! It takes me time to warm up in the winter!!!"
"Oh? So that means you wouldn't be able to do your hero work on winter mornings?" Shido said teasingly, "That a no-go for a future pro, ya know?"
"Tch!"
"Hey Bakugo, did you notice?" Shoto, who was behind Katsuki, asked.
"Are you sayin' there's something you noticed that I didn't!? Go on, enlighten me!"
'So petty...!' Shido and even Endeavor couldn't help but think as they waited for one of Endeavor's sidekicks to 'escort' the hit-and-runner to the police station.
While the interns discussed how quick Endeavor was moving by shooting fire from his feet whenever he accelerated, the two pro heroes had already flown off to another place.
"Melt the ice for me, will ya?" Shido's words were meant for the sidekick, who just gave a thumb up sign and proceeded to melt the ice, which was blocking the way to the main entrance.
"By the way, in case you three haven't already noticed...that opens up into the main road." Endeavor helped explain Shido's action as he flew off.
"Oh? How nice of you to be teaching others apart from Todoroki."
Endeavor just remained silent at Shido's remarks and continued explaining about a hero's job.
"During my fight in Kyushu, I was able to split the work with Hawks and this guy here, but...a true hero must be someone who can handle every role on their own." Endeavor said before turning to face Katsuki, who was just barely behind him and Shido, "Also, for the record, I noticed the glass villain's helpers before you did, got it?"
"You're so damn petty!"
"Pot calling the kettle back..." Shido muttered under his breath, but it seemed that Katsuki managed to hear that.
"You too!"
"Bakugo, you said you wanted to learn what you couldn't do, right? I'll admit that your mobility is top-notch. Well, for a rookie, at least. But as you are right now, you will never be able to surpass me."
Shido spotted a car incident that would happen, but since Endeavor was better suited for this, he didn't rush towards the scene.
"The winter might just be training, but if you're too slow, you won't be able to use your normal excuses anymore. This is not a classroom. If you're ever too slow, you won't be losing points..." Endeavor continued explaining as he used a single hand to stop a truck right before it almost hit a woman and a child, "But rather, human lives."
"Here, have a lollipop, and don't cry, alright?" Shido took out a lollipop from Haniel and gave it to the crying child.
Seeing the lollipop, the child immediately stopped crying and started to eat it happily.
"That's a good boy." Shido patted the child's head while the mother started scolding the driver.
"Shoto. Bakugo. For the time being, I'm giving you both the same 'assignment'."
While Endeavor gave them a task, Shido just stayed by the young girl until they left.
"Bye, Onii-chan!"
"Bye!"
Shido waved towards the leaving child before instantly teleporting next to Endeavor.
"Where have you been?"
"Consoling a crying child. You can't just leave them like that, you know? Try smiling a little more." Shido used both his index fingers and lifted both ends of his own mouth, mimicking a smile.
"That's their job as my sidekicks. I deal with the suppression while they do the aftermath."
"Well, in my case, it's all clones of me, so I could say that I'm used to doing it all by myself?" Shido wondered as he thought back to when he got all the extra memories from his clones.
Everything he needed to know about Hosu City was within those memories he had gotten.
"Tch. Storage and release. The condensation of power. The ability to momentarily draw forth your maximum power, or alternatively, the ability to focus your power on a single point. Practice as many times as it takes until you can achieve one of those two without even having to think about it." Endeavor ignored Shido's boast and started explaining the concept behind his move.
After the explanation, Izuku turned towards Katsuki and said that it was basically the core concept of Katsuki's Ap Shot, making Katsuki wonder how the hell Izuku knew about it.
Soon, noontime came.
Heroes were ultimately still human in the end - they couldn't survive without eating. It's crucial for heroes who need the energy to perform their hero work.
Thus, they took a small break at the top of a building while eating Yakisoba bread.
While Endeavor started explaining and elaborating on the concept of parallel processing, Shido just stood at the side and ate his bread. He wasn't going to listen to Endeavor's words since he had better things to do.
Such as eating his bread.
