I wake up with the bright florescent lights above me. I can smell medicine around me, an indication that I was inside the hospital. I look around, confirming my thoughts.
"So, I am really inside a hospital." I said and tried to sit up. But I felt a wave of pain, not only from my sprained ankle but also my head. "Ahh…" I groaned in pain and held my head that felt like it was splitting.
I felt bandages over my forehead, an indication that my head was probably injured.
'Did I bump my head when I fell from the stairs?' I thought to myself. 'I really don't remember.'
I hear the door to my hospital room open and saw Jeremy coming inside.
"Ana, you are awake!" Jeremy beamed a smile and I can see relief wash in his face. With just a few strides, he is already by my bed side. "How are you feeling? Does your head hurt?" He asked worriedly holding my hand gently.
I was only able to nod as a reply to his question. In truth, the pain that I was feeling in my head felt like someone was drilling a hole in it.
"Nurse, please call the doctor quick." Jeremy said into the nurse intercom found at the head of my hospital bed.
Not long, a male doctor came in with a female nurse following from behind.
"She is feeling pain doctor, please help her." Jeremy said full of worry.
"Calm down Mr. Cooper, it is normal for your girlfriend to feel some pain when the pain relievers have came out of her system." The doctor said. "I will administer another dose of morphine so that she can relax and rest more to heal."
I wanted to correct the doctor about the girlfriend thing, but the pain I was feeling was so intense that I cannot focus on anything but that. I see the doctor inject some medicine into my IV tube. After some time, I can feel my eyelids feeling heavy once more.
"Miss Berkin, you will feel groggy after this. It would be better to sleep and rest well for your body to heal naturally with the help of the medicine." The doctor said.
After the doctor said those words, I was back into unconsciousness once more.
***
I do not know if I was dreaming or I was half awake. I felt a heavy fog hanging over my head, my body was still heavy and I cannot move.
'It must be because of the medicine.' I thought when my consciousness was hanging between sleep and awake.
"Nothing good happens when you are near my daughter!" I heard a loud mad voice. If I am not mistaken, it was my father's voice. "And to think that she will be in an accident in our own home!"
"Uncle Tony…" I heard Jeremy's voice full of guilt.
"Don't you call me uncle, you ungrateful child!" My father roared.
"Now, now Anthony." I heard my mother's voice. "We are inside the hospital, please keep your voice down." I can imagine my mother trying to coax my father to calm down.
"Jeremy dear, I know you did not do anything to harm our baby girl." My mother said. "But it would be best if you go home and rest as well. You have been here since you brought Ana. I am sure you would also need to rest."
"Aunt Mary, I am alright." Jeremy replied. "I want to be here when Ana wakes up."
"What right do you have to be here?" Father said, seething his anger. "You are not her fiancé anymore. You were the one that have thrown that relationship out the window, if you remember clearly."
There was silence for a brief moment. I can only imagine Jeremy having a guilty face in front of my furious parents.
"Please listen to us Jeremy, go home for now." My mother soothed. "Do not worry, you can come back to visit tomorrow. I know you are very worried for Ana as well. I will call you if anything happens, alright?"
"Why would you need to contact him?" My father tried to object.
"Hush now Anthony." My mother scolded father. "He still helped our baby girl when she fell from the stairs. If not for him, who would bring Ana to the hospital?"
"Hmph!" Father grumbled loudly but did not say anything anymore.
"Do not worry Jeremy, we will be here to look after our daughter." Mother assured him.
"Thank you Aunt Mary." Jeremy said.
I can feel Jeremy stand by my bed side. I can feel his warm hands envelope mine gently.
"I will be back tomorrow." Jeremy whispered in my ear. "Get some rest and be sure to get better, okay?" I can feel a light peck on my forehead.
I heard his footsteps going away until the door opened and closed.
"He has the nerve to do that!" My father was furious once more.
"Calm down now, honey. He was still someone that your daughter loved dearly in the past, and also her childhood friend." Mother coaxed him. "That boy is still trying to redeem himself to your daughter."
"Well I do not care. It would be better if Ana would fall in love with another man other than him. Hmph!" Father said.
I wanted to wake up and tell them I am alright, and that they do not need to worry. I also want to tell them that it was not Jeremy's fault that I fell down the stairs. It was thanks to him that nothing much worse happened to me. But the heavy fog is not lifting, not any time soon I guess.
*KNOCK KNOCK*
I heard the door open.
"Uncle, aunty, can I come in?" I heard Shiki's voice.
"Oh Shiki, dear. Please come in." Mother said.
"I just talked to the doctor. He said that Ana had a slight concussion from a bump on her head." Shiki said. "But it is not something to be alarmed of. She only needs ample rest and take her medicine regularly, and she can go home after a few days."
"That is good to hear." I heard my father sigh in relief.
"You can go home to rest as well, aunty, uncle." Shiki said. "I can stay here and look over her."
"That sounds good." Mother said. "There is only one bed here for patient's companion, and we are not that young to have a vigil here in the hospital. We will leave Ana to you Shiki."
"Do not worry aunty, I will take care of her." Shiki said.
"We will be going then." Father said. "Take care of her for us."
Not long, I heard the door open and close once again. It was silent now inside the hospital room I was in, but I can feel another presence that probably belong to Shiki.
I can hear his footsteps towards my bed side and I can feel my bed sink on that side. I can feel his hand hover over my head and gently landed on my forehead, I can feel the warmth from it.
"You reckless girl." Shiki said with a gentle voice. "Sleep well and recover, okay? We still have missions to do."
The warmth from his hand over my forehead started to spread inside my body. The heavy feeling I was feeling a while ago felt lighter, as if it has been lifted. My consciousness started to go under once again, and sleep came over me.
