Ghostly Kid (I)

That day,' Taewon began. 'Me and Jan were home, practicing our new song. It wasn't tuning up the way we wanted. We were working on it all day and yet the tune was off. We were frustrated and angry. Finally, I suggested that we should catch a break. Jan agreed and we went out to take a stroll at our backyard.'

'It was breezy outside. The cool air calmed us down and we felt refreshed as we sat in the yard, playing our guitars. Suddenly, we heard a laugh. We turned around to see a child, sitting on the wall separating our house from the one next to us. He was probably around 6 or 7 years old. Mind you, the wall was around 7 feet tall. A kid climbing that was impossible.

'Hey, kid,' I shouted. 'It's dangerous to sit there!'

The kid gave us an eerie smile. Suddenly, the air felt colder.

'Ahjusshi,' he said. 'Will you play with me?'

'Get down from there,' Jan said. 'Do you want me to call your parents?'

He kept on laughing gleefully. Suddenly, he leaned back and fell to the other side.

'Shit!' I exclaimed and climbed over the wall. I looked over and saw nothing. A fall like that should have injured the kid. But there was no one there. Concerned, I jumped over to the other side. Jan followed suit. We looked around the small yard, but there was no one.

'Hyung,' Jan said, scared. 'We should leave.'

'Not till I see if the kid is safe,' I said. I walked towards the house. The door was ajar.

'Hyung,' Jan whined. 'I have a bad feeling about this.'

I ignored him and slowly opened the door.

'Hello,' I called. 'Anyone in here?'

No answer. I went further in. The floor creaked beneath me. The house looked inhabited. Jan followed me in.

'I don't think anyone lives here,' he whispered. 'Where did that kid go?'

'Hee hee hee,' came a laugh. I spun around but there was no one.

'Hee hee hee.' There it was again. But there was no one around but us. Where was that laugh coming from?

'Hy...ung,' Jan tapped my shoulder. He was looking as white as sheet.

'What Jan?' I asked. He slowly pointed upwards. I looked up. And I saw it.

The kid was hanging upside down from the ceiling, with blood shot eyes looking straight at us. His gleeful smile etched onto him like a maniac. And he was coming for us.

'AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!' We both screamed and ran out. We ran till we reached the nearest Church. The priest saw us and asked what happened. We told him everything in details. After we finished our story, he looked very serious. That's when he told us about the child who died in that house because of rabies many years ago. His parents were poor and could not afford to treat him. So the poor child died and now his restless soul haunts that place. Anyone who goes into that house will suffer a terrible fate. He gave us amulets for our protection and warned us not to go in there again.

While the ghost never came inside our house, we still hear its wails and laughter at night. I will never forget what I saw. So believe us or not, we saw what we saw. And we do not want to see it ever again.'
