In front of the hospital, Sophia walked in, while pushing walker she was feeling nervous because she knows that if there was no improvement this month is more than likely that there is no hope for her son to walk again.
she is firm to tell him if there was no improvement in his condition even though it will be difficult for her to see her son sorrowful.
She knows that her son loves her, and didn't want to burden her, he loves basketball too and with this news, he will lose a sport that he loved, and he would start balm himself for what happened in her life. She could only hope that there will be an improvement.
In Doc's Office.
After exchanging the greetings before the start of the check up to decide how much improvement did walker make.
"Are you ready? " said the doc.
Walker nodded with a mixed expression between nervousness and hope.
"So let start," Said the doctor.
The checkup was simple but will decide the future of Walker the test was just a small rubber hammer is going to hit his knee. And his knee should react with just a little movement to give him hope.
When the hammer was closing to his knee, he closed his eyes and time went slowly.
But when Walker opens his eye see that the doctor left and saw that his expression has a little bit sympathy that he tries to conceal.
Walker knew that he failed in this test he felt that as if his world start to collapse.
but he snapped back to reality when he heard the nurse.
"Walker let me help you," said the nurse with a friendly smile.
"Thanks," said Walker.
After the nurse helped him back to the wheelchair, his mother finished talking with the doc. She comes to Walker, and they left the hospital.
"I took a break from work is there is a place you want to visit," Sophia said while pushing her son from behind.
"Let's go to the cemetery it's been a long time since I want to visit dad, "Walker said.
She was going to reject because she wants him to have fun not going to a cemetery. She wants to deliver the news to him after spending a happy day with her son.
She knows that her son has the same love for his father, he was always happy with both of them but the day his father died was his birthday.
Walker's dad was coming from work to celebrate his son's birthday when a drunk driver crashed with walker's dad.
Walker stays up late waiting for his father to celebrate his birthday with him but the phone rang, and it was the news of his father death.
Sophia lied to her son and told him that his father is a star in the night. But what she didn't know that Walker knew that his father died and that his mother lied to him. Because in the day after the death of his father, his mom tried to coax him to sleep but when she saw him fall asleep. Sophia exited the room.
Walker wakes up and starts staring at the window watching the stars and start talking to his father. While he was talking to his father, he heard crying. He opened the door and saw his mother crying.
He felt that his heartache, seeing his mother crying, Walker overheard her talking to his grandmother and from their conversation, he knows that his father will never come back and he felt the urge to cry. So he closed the door and go to his bed and start crying silently.
After he calmed down, he remembered how his mother was happy and smiling, while she was trying to coax him to sleep.
So he decided to make her happy and never see her cry again because he hated the feeling that he felt when he saw his mother crying.
"Mom, why are you spacing let's go," Walker said.
Sophia snapped back to reality and said: "let's go,"
After visiting his father's grave, and on their way back, Sophia noticed a bench on the street and she said: "let sit there,"
"Okay, " said Walker with a smile but inside he knows something was wrong with his mother.
After she sat on the bench and Walker was close to her in his wheelchair he saw his mother was thinking of something and didn't know how to tell him.
" what's bothering you, will you tell me," said Walker with a questioning gaze.
sophia was baffled for a moment.
"oh..no..there is.. nothing," Sophia said while stuttering.
"it's about my injury right, what the doctor told you," Walker said.
"About that?" Sophia was trying to find a way to tell him without hurting him, but she felt like walker already knew.
"I wouldn't be able to walk again is that what the doctor told you ?" Walker Asked
"how did you know, did the Doc tell you?" Sophia asked.
"No he didn't tell me but I know it was related to my injury.because in the past two months you were anxious," Walker said
"uh." Sophia was shocked that her son exposed her before she even tells him and she starts fell guilty about her deciding to hide the truth from her son.
"it's okay mom, I did some research myself, and I knew that if the someone didn't make any improvement in the first two month its most likely would never be able to stand again," Walker said with anxious writing over his face even though he wants to hide it.
"I'm Sorry I didn't tell you about it " Sophia saw that sad expression on her son's face and felt that her heartache.
"don't blame yourself over that, I know you didn't want me to suffer and put more pressure on me if I knew that there could be a dead end in front of me so don't blame yourself okay, so do I have to continue with rehab," said Walker while trying to calm his mother down.
"Yes, the doctor said even if it was impossible for you to walk the rehab will help strengthen your legs, " told Sophia.
"for how many months?" questioned Walker.
"6-9month," Answered Sophia
"but the school will not be paying for the rest of the months after they receive the results of the rehab a month for now," Walker stated
"yes, that what they told me if there wasn't any improvement they wouldn't continue paying, and if we want to resume we will need to pay," Sophia explained.
"did you ask the doctor about what are the chances of me having any improvement in the next month," asked Walker because he read that there were people that recovered even after they didn't show any progress in the first two months.
"I asked him about it, and he told there is a chance you could show some improvement, but the chances are not high it's about 1%," Sophia quoted what the doctor said.
"so there is still hope, I don't plan to give up yet 1% is so much than no hope at all," said Walker with confidence in his eyes.
Sophia nodded she was happy that her son didn't give up on himself and still that bright young child she knew.
IN-HOME
Walker was in his room. The door closed, and he was looking at his legs as if they were his frenemies.
If his legs didn't give up on him, his mother wouldn't have cried. He starts beating his legs.
Walker starts crying he was resisting the urge to cry, so that his mother will be at ease.
Moreover, he knows that 1% is too little. And Walker had a feeling that his legs will never recover.
The days passed by and there was only a week before the checkup at the end of the month.
He was trying too hard struggling for that last ray of light as the days pass by that ray of light started to diminish.
Walker returns home after a tough day in the rehab center, Sophia helped her son to bed. She notices that her son temperature is high, she went to bring medication from a drugstore.
Meanwhile, Walker, his conscience start to fade a sound in his head was heard, and this was a gift that will change the life of Walker.
