Well to be honest if your mc has no others goal than to be with his family then the story might get boring real quick, that's why those authors make their mc save minato like you says. But again, I agree that this is also very boring, so that's why Mc in fanfics and storys in general have to have their own goals that they want to achieve no matter what. A nice Exemple would be One Piece where luffy wants to become the king of the pirates, or even naruto who want to become the hokage. Of course, this goal can change over the storyline according to the events your mc have experienced.
