You make it seem like he had a bullet point list on how to end their friendship. His flaw was thinking he could have it all. Power was something he craved even before he even met her, if anyone grew up like he did its very easy to do so. He never sought it in spite of her. If anything he sought power in spite of everything, he had only one outlook. With power comes control and as he grew up without that he sought it desperately. Also if he just listened to everything Lily said do you think his time in hogwarts would be good?
