Wrapped in a towel, he came out of the bathroom to find that a dinner tray had been set up on a fold-out side table. A huge, domed silver cover, big enough to house a rack of lamb, sat in the center of the tray. A stack of crackers and a bottle of water were on one side. Well, the Carmodys didn’t do things by halves. He removed the ornate cover and burst out laughing. Chicken noodle soup. And next to it was a note that read, “Sleep well. We’ll raid the kitchen after the detective leaves.” It was signed with a “D.”

Having resolved nothing, Evan gave up and went home to his apartment. After a shower and a change of clothes, he drove to the restaurant. All the way there he lectured himself to be polite, to restrain his temper and to do whatever he could to get in Danny’s good graces. And wanting to win Danny over, well, that was purely a tactical decision. It had absolutely nothing to do with those beautiful brown eyes.
