I think there was a misunderstanding there. While reading this novel, I suggest forgetting the meaning of the word "magus". It would be much better if you could just think that the word "Magus" is the name of a race in this story like Elf, Fairy, Dwarf, etc... You can consider them as aliens that look like humans if it helps. I hope this helps you understand it better.
