Very common in the business and you would be stupid to go in demanding full creative control AND ownership as a rookie with 3 albeit popular songs. If he wanted that then he should have used his earnings to make an album himself. The best case scenario for him would be to have a good relationship with his label and renegotiate after 3 albums for full or partial ownership from then on.
