You can write anything you want, but it's really difficult, so most of the time the author includes something from their own life. For example, in The Villain Who Robbed the Heroines, the main character suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), which was a part of the author's own life.
It's true, but imagination and personality are influenced by each other. You cannot imagine anything out of thin air; even what you dream is linked by your daily life.
