Liquids can only be compressed by a minimal amount due to the molecules already being densely packed. You would need to make the liquid into a solid state by cooling the liquid. Doesn't matter if it's water or metal. Hydraulics work with a liquid under pressure. If a liquid could be compressed into a solid state, hydraulics would not work.

I know I'm reading this late. I genuinely love your book and am very thankful for this novel. Mistakes where words aren't completed or whatever happen. We all hopefully learn from those mistakes. On to more nature involved ideas for you. I would ask, maybe you already have done this, but if you could look into an ecosystem where, like the Native Americans used what they call, the three sisters, which are composed of maize or corn with beans and squash which creates a system of reintroducing nutrients into the soil while also trapping moisture in the soil. I'm not saying this to make food for the characters but as a way to create another example of a harmonious relationship with nature, such as the world tree.
