Before the Nakba, Jaffa was the cultural capital of Palestine, as it contained the most important Palestinian daily newspapers, dozens of magazines and publishing houses, in addition to containing the most important and beautiful cinemas, theaters and cultural clubs in Palestine. Today, the city forms four suburbs of Tel Aviv. The city consists of 12 neighborhoods, three of which are inhabited by Arabs. Among the most important of these neighborhoods are Al-Ajami, Al-Manshiyya, Irsheid, Al-Nuzha, Al-Jabaliya and Hermesh. In 1949, the Israeli government decided to unify the cities of Jaffa and Tel Aviv administratively, under the joint municipal name "Tel Aviv-Jaffa Municipality", after changing many of its features, demolishing a large part of its neighborhoods and Judaizing them after Jewish organizations occupied them on April 26, 1948, in an operation called "Operation Dror".
