I think it was more of a response towards what they saw as bigotry. They did state that they are Arab so they most likely have experience in these regards. But in all points, the text doesn't even say anything about the changing of tradition. If it does then it's very minor things. A popular leader would be plenty enough for a minor change in culture.

Sucks that those bad comments got to you. but eh, though a more ambitious Iraq was semi expected from me, this is definitely a good ending for a alt history novel. 9/10 mustard is the world's biggest mistake so the lack of its removal from the world is worth a negative point.
