The MC spent his time cultivating and exploring his martial soul. His martial soul is a support type, not direct combat. That was until he found out he could hold spirit souls. MC also prefers using his intellect.

When he got his first spirit ring he wasn't rank 20 but 10, innate full soul power. But since he diligently cultivated before getting his first spirit ring his rank would increase to 15 at most. The reason he achieved rank 20 was because of taking the FULL soul of the tree as his first spirit soul. The extra spirt energy from the tree and since it also possessed mental energy boosted him to 20, 5 extra ranks. But that increase was not his own spirit energy but from the tree. He would need a bit of time to consolidate it as a strong foundation is important. I hope this explains it.

I can understand why you thought that. He was evil beachhead he needed to survive in the harsher world. having a soft mentality would get him killed and the previous experience of being alone also made him more evil. But don't worry he won't be unnecessary evil
