Relying entirely on metaknowledge (and not using their brain otherwise) seems to be a common problem among self inserts. Does the SI really think someone with Walter's personality will just let him go? He'd have better luck playing along until he convinces Gus that Walter is too dangerous to stay alive, wait for Walter to get killed, then convince Gus to let him retire (likely after training Gale or some other replacement).
While avoiding cliches is a valid concern, the reason some things are cliche is that they're such a good idea that people with a brain go with them. As other commenters have noted, occlumency pays dividends the earlier one learns it, so there's no good reason not to learn it ASAP.
Luffy's so stupid that Albert Einstein and Steven Hawking needed to be born to balance the average intelligence level of the universe.
Hold on... is the MC supposed to be another Grunt SI variant? For a supposed military otaku, he's acting more like a hypercompetent Gary Stu than, say, Kouta Hirano from HotD. Unless he's not as competent as he thinks he is? If that's the case, reality inevitably slapping him in the face should be funny. Kinda has happened already, what with showing off to the extent he did in school and assuming he'd still be in Team 8.
