Why wouldn't the main character tell him straight up "I do not resent you right now. But if you do not keep my secret, I will: so if you want to stay friends, it would behoof you you keep mum."??

Why wouldn't the main character tell him straight up "I do not resent you right now. But if you do not keep my secret, I will: so if you want to stay friends, it would behoof you you keep mum."??

I don't get why the main character is such a wimp. Or, rather, why is tutoring a delinquent no biggie and telling someone "Man, stop being so clingy, you are creeping me out." is not an option?
