Interesting premise. I still don't understand why sasuke lost. i mean he had all the future knowledge. He just had to be patient and then strike. Heck he could have used orochimaru to learn impure world reincarnation and resurrected minato and forced him to seal other half of nine tails inside him. But since you mentioned Sage himself opposing sasuke, his chances of victory were diminished.
