This is 1 first world War if I'm not mistaken. Now thinking historically, the world War wasn't called like that because it was just a war that involved the whole world, between various factors is that people with absolute no training besides how to wield a gun were deployed to the battlefield, and were used as desposable pawns for the strategies of the generals. This marked a lot of people because such method wasn't used so forcedly for hundreds of years. In the black ages it was a commun occurrence but at that time it was an outrage.

'Where' referes to a place, 'were' is what you should have used there, they aren't the same thing

I speak for myself when I say that, maybe, if you try use commas and try to improve yourself, the sensation of satisfaction you will receive is enormous, when one thrives to improve oneself, they thrive for, in a way, make the world a better place.
