Good question man, actually Empoleon doesn't show up in X and Y. Though I might be mistaken but I don't remember him showing up and after googling it I appear to be right. If it actually did show up it had a super minor appearance where it didn't even say its name and our MC has forgotten about it. Oh and the reason he knows about Serena is because at the time that I wrote this story Netflix had season 1 and (x n y)
